Recycling has become part of our everyday lives and does a lot towards protecting the environment. But how often do we think about reusing our wastewater? Let’s look at some of the ways this can be done.

We use so much water every day without even thinking about it. Bathing, washing dishes, and doing the laundry are just some of the tasks we do each day that use a lot of water. Any wastewater that results from these activities is referred to as greywater. Although greywater is not potable, it can be used for non-potable things like flushing the toilet and irrigation, etc. We must mention here, however, that we are not talking about blackwater which is quite different than greywater. You should never reuse untreated blackwater as it contains many contaminants.

There are a couple of different categories of greywater. Treated and untreated. Greywater that has been correctly treated can be stored for some time, whereas untreated greywater needs to be reused immediately.

Feelings are mixed about greywater usage in homes. Some feel concerned that greywater would aid the spread of harmful bacteria, while others feel that reusing our water for things like irrigation is a great way to preserve our most precious resource. What should we conclude then? If you would like to use greywater in your home, consult first with your local council and see what guidelines they have in place regarding the use of greywater.
