Every year natural disasters bring untold destruction. Because these events show no signs of letting up, it is a good idea for us to take some steps to prepare for them. One of those steps is knowing what to do in an emergency. Preparing in advance for this could save lives. Here are a few basic guidelines:

First, prepare an emergency go bag. Your go bag should be small enough to grab in a hurry and contain enough provisions to last you for about three days. Besides nonperishable food and water, your bag should also have extra medication (if needed), a change of clothes, copies of essential documents, and some cash. Keep your emergency bag in a place that is easy to access.

Discuss with your loved ones what they would need to do during a natural disaster. Make sure everyone knows the location of meet-up points and evacuation routes and keep in mind that these routes may vary depending on the type of disaster. It is vital to know this ahead of time, as communication via cell phone may not be possible.

Some natural disasters require us to stay indoors for a while. To prepare for this, try to keep extra supplies of water and nonperishable food stocked in the house, as supermarkets tend to sell out very fast when people panic buy.

We hope you never have to go through a natural disaster, but it is always a wise course to be prepared for one.
