The idea that tiny living organisms are sharing our living space is not a very pleasant one, but the fact is that dust mites are just that, microscopic creatures that are found in practically every home. For the majority of people, dust mites are harmless. For others, however, they can cause allergic reactions, leading to misery for the sufferer.
Although it is almost impossible to completely rid your home of dust mites, there are some things you can do to reduce their numbers. For example, dusting and vacuuming the home regularly will help to keep them under control. Use a slightly damp cloth to wipe surfaces and, if you are able, use a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter, designed to stop dust from reentering the air.
Dust mites do not survive in high temperatures so wash all bed linens in hot water (no less than 140 degrees Fahrenheit). Alternatively, you can place bedding in the dryer for 10 minutes on a high setting. This is one important way to eliminate dust mites as they tend to thrive in bedding.
Another environment that dust mites love is a humid one. Keep a good flow of air through the house and try to control humidity levels. Air conditioners and even electric blankets can help with this. Many allergy sufferers find that an air purifier help but, this will only help with dust mites that are airborne. Since dust mites do not tend to be found in the air, an air purifier will not get rid of huge numbers of them.
