When reading the title of this blog, you may have wondered what appliance we are talking about, seeing that all appliances should be used correctly. The appliance in question is a kitchen garbage disposal unit. Without realizing it, we may not be using it in the way it was intended.
A kitchen garbage disposal is designed to grind up small scraps of food waste so that they can be flushed easily through the system and into the septic tank or sewer. The problem is that very often other items end up in the sink and subsequently into the garbage disposal unit. It is these items that can stop the garbage disposal from functioning properly. What are some of these items?
Nonfood items should not go through the garbage disposal system. These include aluminum foil, bottle caps, and plastic wrap, etc. It is amazing how easily these kinds of items end up in the sink. You should also avoid pouring certain liquids into a garbage disposal or the sink in general. Certain chemicals and grease can adversely affect the system, particularly if you have a septic tank.
There are even some food items that should not go into a garbage disposal unit. Fibrous foods such as corn husks and potato peelings can cause problems. If you do have to place them into the garbage disposal, just make sure to do so in small amounts and keep the water running even after the unit has stopped grinding.
